What exactly is a cloud service?
A cloud service refers to all services that a provider provides to a user over the Internet. This includes platforms, applications and pure infrastructures. This means that access to the services is basically possible from any location, be it from the office, from home or even on a business trip in a foreign country. These services are also characterized by a specific billing model. The service providers usually charge a monthly usage fee. The amount of this often depends on the scope of the service you use.
What types of cloud services are there and how do they differ?
The services in the cloud differ based on the technical implementation. At the core there are three layers. This scheme, also known as the cloud stack, builds on one another and is divided into Infrastructure-as-a-Service, Platform-as-a-Service and Software-as-a-Service. At the lowest layer is Infrastructure-as-a-Service. Here you rent the pure infrastructure without additional services, for example a server in the cloud like AWS. With Platform-as-a-Service, in addition to the infrastructure, the service provider provides an application environment that you use individually. An example of PaaS is Microsoft Azure. The highest level is Software-as-a-Service, where you rent a ready-to-use application in the cloud. For example, Salesforce is SaaS.
