A terminal server centrally delivers applications and desktops, making workstations accessible from any device. Whether using a Windows Terminal Server (RDS) or a Linux environment, your staff can work securely, from any location and without the need to install software locally. High-performance systems from HPE, DELL, Lenovo and Fujitsu form the reliable hardware foundation.

Technical requirements for a terminal server
RAM per user is the key factor in sizing – followed by CPU cores, storage and the network.
Varies per system per Office user (RDS); for VDI, it is more per desktop. Allocate generously, as RAM is usually the first bottleneck.
Enough cores and clock speed for many concurrent sessions. Office workloads are modest; ERP/CAD requires significantly more.
Fast storage handles boot storms and simultaneous morning logins – particularly important for VDI with many desktops.
For CAD, graphics or video: a GPU with vGPU technology distributes graphical performance across multiple sessions.
10 GbE and low latency for simultaneous access by many users and fast profile operations.
As many staff members rely on the system: redundant power supplies and – once a certain critical size is reached – a second server for high availability (HA).
Supported platforms
Microsoft RDS (Windows Server) · Linux Terminal Server · Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops · VMware Horizon · Azure Virtual Desktop / Hybrid.
Our hardware recommendations
From a small office server to a high-availability RDS farm.
| Scenario / Requirements | Recommended systems | Configuration recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Small team (up to ~25 users, RDS) | DELL R650 · HPE DL360 Gen 11 · Lenovo SR630 V2 · Fujitsu RX2530 M6 | 1U, 128–256 GB RAM, NVMe – a server for standard office work |
| Medium-sized business (25–100 users, RDS) | DELL R750 · HPE DL380 Gen 11 · Lenovo SR650 V2 · Fujitsu RX2540 M6 | 2U, 256–512 GB RAM, multiple cores, NVMe, 10 GbE |
| VDI / dedicated desktops | DELL R750 · HPE DL380 Gen 11/12 · Lenovo SR650 V2 | High RAM capacity, plenty of NVMe, vGPU where required |
| Graphics / CAD / 3D | DELL R750 + GPU · HPE DL380 + GPU | GPU with vGPU licence for multiple graphics sessions |
| Cost-optimised (refurbished) | DELL R640/R740xd · HPE DL380 Gen 10 · Lenovo SR650 V2 | Predictable workload – more users per euro |
As a Dell and Lenovo partner, we receive particularly attractive terms on a project-by-project basis – it’s well worth enquiring, even for RDS farm projects with multiple nodes.
Specific use cases
Standardised office work
50 staff members work via RDS on a DELL R750 using Office, email and industry-specific software – one server replaces 50 individual PCs that would otherwise require maintenance, and updates are carried out centrally.
Working from home & field staff
Remote access from anywhere to a centralised, secure environment – data never leaves the data centre; the end device serves only as a display.
Branch operations
A compact, remotely manageable server (Lenovo SR630 V2, Fujitsu TX1330 M5) serves a branch without the need for on-site IT staff.
Why refurbished equipment makes sense for this application
Terminal server workloads are highly predictable and not particularly computationally intensive – ideal conditions for refurbished hardware. The savings can be channelled into more RAM or a second server for redundancy.
Frequently Asked Questions
A central server that enables multiple users to access applications and desktops simultaneously – via RDS on Windows or Linux implementations. Software is managed centrally; the end device only needs a remote connection.
A traditional server provides services in the background. A terminal server hosts many interactive user sessions simultaneously – several employees work on the same applications at the same time, as if they were working locally.
This depends heavily on the application profile. For standardised office work via RDS, a well-equipped 2U server often supports 50–100 users. The key factors are CPU cores, RAM and storage speed.
RDS is resource-efficient and cost-effective for standardised work; VDI provides each user with an isolated desktop, but requires more resources. For standard workloads, RDS is usually the better choice.
For Windows terminal servers, yes: one RDS CAL per user or device. For Linux, there is no licensing model. We can advise you on the most cost-effective option.
This depends on the number of users, server performance, licensing model and additional services. We’ll provide you with a bespoke quote.
Very secure when configured correctly: centralised AD/LDAP access control, server-side patch management, encrypted sessions, centralised data storage, VPN/firewall.
Very suitable – terminal server workloads are predictable and undemanding. The money saved can be invested in more RAM or a high-availability (HA) partner.
